WILDSOUL STUDIO · FURSUIT CARE GUIDE

HOW TO CLEAN & CARE FOR A FURSUIT

A custom fursuit is a handcrafted creation, and thoughtful care can help preserve its appearance, shape, and character over time.

From brushing after wear to safe drying and storage, this guide covers practical everyday care for your fursuit. Because construction and materials can vary between creations, always consider the specific features of your suit before using any deep-cleaning method.

01

EVERYDAY FURSUIT CARE

Regular care does not need to be complicated. A few simple habits after wearing your fursuit can help keep the fur looking clean and reduce unnecessary wear.

AIR IT OUT AFTER WEAR

After wearing your fursuit, allow damp areas to air out rather than immediately placing the suit into closed storage.

Good airflow helps moisture escape and is especially important for pieces that have been worn for an extended period.

BRUSH THE FUR GENTLY

Light brushing can help restore the direction and appearance of faux fur after wear or storage.

Work gently and avoid pulling aggressively through tangled areas. Pay particular attention to long fur and areas that experience friction during wear.

CHECK HIGH-CONTACT AREAS

Paws, neck areas, cuffs, the inside of wearable pieces, and other high-contact areas may require more frequent attention.

Catching dirt, moisture, or small maintenance issues early can make ongoing care easier.

02

HOW TO CLEAN A FURSUIT

There is no single cleaning method that is appropriate for every fursuit component.

Construction methods, fur types, internal materials, accessories, markings, and special features can all affect how a piece should be cleaned.

START WITH GENTLE SPOT CLEANING

For small areas of surface dirt, localized cleaning is often preferable to unnecessarily cleaning an entire piece.

Use a gentle approach and avoid saturating structural areas unless you know that the construction is suitable for it.

TEST BEFORE USING A NEW CLEANING PRODUCT

Before applying an unfamiliar cleaning product to a visible area, test it carefully on a small, inconspicuous section when appropriate.

Different materials, colors, painted details, adhesives, and finishes may react differently.

BE CAREFUL WITH STRUCTURED PIECES

Fursuit heads and other structured components may contain foam, adhesives, internal supports, painted details, or other materials that require different care from removable fabric components.

Do not assume that a cleaning method suitable for one component is automatically suitable for another.

03

CAN YOU WASH A FURSUIT?

Some fursuit components may support more thorough washing, while others require specialized or limited cleaning.

Before washing a component, consider:

  • how it is constructed
  • whether it contains foam or structural materials
  • whether it contains glued elements
  • whether it includes painted or airbrushed details
  • whether accessories are removable
  • whether it contains magnets or other special components
  • whether the maker provided component-specific care instructions

When you are uncertain, use the most conservative cleaning method and ask the maker before proceeding.

Do not assume that an entire fursuit can be machine washed simply because one component can.

04

AVOID EXCESSIVE HEAT

Heat can be harmful to many materials commonly used in costume construction and faux fur.

Avoid exposing your fursuit to unnecessary high heat during cleaning, drying, storage, or transportation.

In particular, do not use high-temperature drying methods unless the specific construction has been confirmed as suitable for them.

When in doubt, prioritize airflow over heat.

05

DRY YOUR FURSUIT COMPLETELY

Drying is one of the most important parts of fursuit care. Before storing a cleaned or damp component:

PROVIDE GOOD AIRFLOW

Allow air to circulate around the piece rather than leaving it sealed inside a bag or container.

CHECK THICK & HIDDEN AREAS

The surface may feel dry before thicker fur, padding, interior layers, or difficult-to-reach areas have fully dried.

DO NOT STORE WHILE DAMP

Storing a fursuit while moisture remains inside can create unpleasant odors and may contribute to material deterioration.

Give every component enough time to dry thoroughly before packing it away.

06

HOW TO BRUSH FAUX FUR

Brushing helps maintain the visual direction and texture of the fur.

BRUSH WITH CONTROL

Use gentle, controlled strokes rather than aggressively pulling through the fibers.

WORK THROUGH SMALL AREAS

If the fur is tangled or compressed, work gradually rather than forcing a brush through a large section at once.

PAY ATTENTION TO FUR DIRECTION

After cleaning or drying, brushing the fur back into its intended direction can help restore the character's finished appearance.

Be especially careful around seams, delicate details, accessories, and intentionally styled areas.

07

FURSUIT STORAGE

Proper storage matters just as much as cleaning.

STORE CLEAN & DRY

Before long-term storage, make sure the suit is reasonably clean and completely dry.

AVOID HEAVY COMPRESSION

Do not leave structured pieces crushed beneath heavy objects. Heads, ears, horns, tails, and other dimensional components should be stored in a way that helps preserve their intended shape.

CHOOSE A DRY ENVIRONMENT

Avoid prolonged storage in damp, excessively hot, or poorly ventilated environments.

PROTECT DELICATE DETAILS

Take extra care with horns, ears, claws, glasses, collars, bells, removable accessories, magnets, and decorative pieces.

Remove accessories before storage when the design allows and when doing so reduces the risk of damage.

08

TRAVELING WITH YOUR FURSUIT

Conventions and travel can put additional stress on a fursuit.

Before packing:

  • make sure every component is dry
  • protect structured pieces from crushing
  • keep delicate accessories secure
  • avoid forcing too many components into a small space
  • check the suit after unpacking

After travel, allow compressed fur to recover and brush it gently back into shape.

09

WHEN SHOULD YOU CONTACT YOUR MAKER?

If you are unsure how to clean or maintain a particular component, asking before experimenting is safer than risking damage.

You should be especially cautious when a piece contains:

  • unusual internal construction
  • extensive painted or airbrushed details
  • electronics
  • complex moving parts
  • magnets
  • permanently attached accessories
  • delicate decorative elements

10

LONG-TERM FURSUIT MAINTENANCE

Good maintenance is not only about cleaning.

Periodically inspect your fursuit for:

  • loose seams
  • stressed attachment points
  • compressed or tangled fur
  • loose accessories
  • damaged decorative elements
  • areas experiencing unusual wear

Addressing a small issue early is often easier than waiting until it becomes a larger repair.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I clean my fursuit?

There is no universal schedule. How often a piece needs cleaning depends on how frequently it is worn, the conditions in which it is used, the component, and its construction. Regular airing, inspection, and localized care can help you determine when more thorough cleaning is needed.

Can I put my fursuit in a washing machine?

Do not assume every fursuit or every component is machine washable. Construction varies significantly. Follow component-specific maker instructions before using a washing machine.

Can I put a fursuit in a dryer?

Avoid unnecessary high heat. Faux fur and other construction materials may be sensitive to heat. Unless a maker has confirmed a particular drying method is appropriate, prioritize thorough drying with good airflow.

How do I keep fursuit fur fluffy?

Gentle brushing after wear, cleaning, drying, or storage can help restore fur direction and appearance. Avoid aggressive brushing that may stress fibers, seams, or detailed areas.

What should I do if my fursuit gets wet?

Allow the affected component to dry thoroughly with good airflow before storage. Pay attention to thick, padded, structured, and hidden areas that may retain moisture longer than the surface.

How should I store a fursuit head?

Store it clean and dry in a location where it is protected from crushing, excessive heat, moisture, and unnecessary pressure on ears, horns, accessories, or other dimensional features.
